Short interview with Prof. Dr. Biying Fu
Prof. Dr. Biying Fu was appointed Professor of Applied Computer Science with a focus on Explainable AI at the Faculty of Design Computer Science Media of Hochschule RheinMain (HSRM) on October 01, 2024. She began her academic career at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, where she obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. She went on to complete a doctorate at the Technical University of Darmstadt and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD on “Sensor Applications for Human Activity Recognition in Smart Environments”. At the Fraunhofer Institute, Ms. Fu worked from 2014 to 2024 in the “Smart Living and Biometric Technologies” department on topics such as human-centered machine learning and biometrics.
What aspect of your research fascinates you the most?
In terms of my focus on Explainable AI, it is particularly exciting for me to research how sensors perceive and understand the world using modern algorithms, how black box models make their decisions and how reliable AI models are in making decisions.
What does “good teaching” mean to you?
In my opinion, good teaching is not just about transferring knowledge, but also about providing students with the best possible support and individual assistance during their studies. I find it equally important to work interactively with those I teach.
What did you want to be growing up?
I always wanted to be a teacher. Even as a child I enjoyed passing on what I had learned to others.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Besides my job, I enjoy reading and am curious about things I don’t know. I also like traveling and getting to know different landscapes, cultures and languages.
